QUESTION: “Why is Hawaii PVL sill using an old 2008 NEC version?” They are only using this version for first-time applicants. After you pass the exam and receive your license, you are expected to take an approved continuing education course and updates to the 2017 version will be covered in that course. This info is contained in a document titled “Frequently Asked Questions - Electrician and Plumbers” (from the Electrical Board link above).

The books listed below are NOT allowed at the exam location
We highly recommend that you purchase one of the two NEC index books above to study for your exam. Each book is a comprehensive subject index to the NEC. They provide an even faster way to look up subjects covered in the exam and are far more detailed than the index at the end of the code book.
