This study guide is organized to match the way topics appear on the ICC (G17) Journeyman Electrician National Standard exam. Here is what is included in your download:
Use these questions alongside your National Electrical Code (NEC) book. Read a section of the book, then work through the related practice questions to check your understanding.
Each question includes a reference to the NEC article number where the subject is discussed. This helps you quickly review why the correct answer is right and reinforces the process of looking up information efficiently — a key skill for an open-book exam.
Bookmarks have been added throughout the study guide to help you:
Use the additional questions drawn from Ugly’s Electrical References to strengthen your coverage of general theory, Ohm’s Law and topics that commonly appear on the electrical exam.
Sample exam questions are sourced from the National Electrical Code (NEC) and Ugly’s Electrical References.
Get instant access to the (G17) Journeyman Electrician Exam Study Guide and start practicing with exam-style questions tied directly to the 2017 NEC and Ugly’s Electrical References. Use the included code references to build speed, accuracy, and confidence for an open-book ICC exam.
All study materials are delivered electronically for instant access after purchase and are provided as ZIP archives containing standard US letter-size PDF files. For reliable access, files should be downloaded and extracted on a computer, tablet or printed for offline study.

Applications for licensing are managed by your local city or county government jurisdiction. Those agencies determine which ICC exam is appropriate for your license based on local code adoption. They also determine if pre-authorization is required.
Please consult the ICC bulletin for more detailed information about the number of questions in subject categories covered in the exam, time allowed, how to schedule your test date and required books. The button below will allow you to view or download the bulletin for Local (National Standard) exams.
NOTE: The content shown in the outline for "Plan Reading" is not part of the NEC. We have added a recommended book title below that covers this subject.
We recommend that you purchase one of the reference books above to study for your exam. Each book is a comprehensive subject index to the NEC. They provide an even faster way to look up answers in the code and are far more detailed than the index at the end of the code book.
Ugly's References contain practical applications of the NEC such as Ohm‘s Law, series/parallel circuits, voltage drop, load calculations, motor phases, impediance, inductance and math formulas you are expected to know. “Basic Knowledge” and “Electrical Calculations” are subjects covered in the exam and are assumed (most likely not listed as a subject for electrical and mechanical exams of all types).
